There are a couple ways to get discounts on hotel rooms using the Internet: last minute deals and consolidators.
A few hotel chains offer last minute room deals to sell excess room capacity at discounted prices, especially on the weekends.
Many of these rates are offered in conjunction with the last minute airfare deals.
If you are looking to book a room in advance, check with a consolidator. Hotel consolidators purchase rooms in bulk and re-sell them to
consumers at discounted prices. You should also check with the consolidators when you are looking for a room in "sold out" city.
Before you book a room through a consolidator, check with the hotel to see if they can offer you a lower rate. Call the hotel
directly rather than the national reservation line, the local person has more leeway to offer lower rates. When you are on the
phone with the reservation agent ask for a discounted rate. Hotel offer discounts for almost anything, including AAA, AARP,
weekend rates, or even just for asking.
If you ask twice, it may save you even more money.
